The reason for this is simple, Indian thinking knows that the satisfaction only comes from inside and therefore Indians have never found any reason to subdue anybody else. If only Abhrahamic religions understood this simple idea, most problems that humanity faces will disappear.
You are trying to compensate for the actions of Muslim rulers in the past. I agree that the rulers you talked about were tolerant and India prospered in their rule, but you fail to realize that under Islamic rule, Indian Science, Philosophy and Free Thinking were destroyed. Why did this happen, because the dogma of Islam did not allow such free thinking to flourish. Europe went into dark ages because of Christianity from 300AD onwards and Indian went into intellectual decline because of Islam. This decline happened because of the dogma of these two religions.
There is a fundamental problem with Islam and Christianity. They think that their God is truth and rest are all false. This limits their scope in really experiencing God, because they cannot look beyond their book. They do not realize that God is infinite and cannot be limited to just one book. If Christianity and Islam will engage in honest philosophical debate with Hindus and Buddhists, it is 100% guaranteed that Hindus and Buddhists will come out victorious over Islam and Christianity. It is clearly evident from the fact that Hinduism and Buddhism can withstand the attack from modern science, while Islam and Christianity stand no chance.
Europe came out of dark ages because they rediscovered Plato, Aristotle and came in contact with Indian Sanskrit texts. Islam also needs such a reform, it started off well with Rumi and Khayyam, but somewhere lost its way. Just look at how Wahabism is using this madness of religious intolerance to gain power. In response to that, religious intolerance is also increasing in Hinduism and Buddhism. As a result everybody looses. If you respect me and I respect you then there is no problem, but if you do not respect me then how can you expect me to respect you. This is the fundamental reason why Hindus do not like Muslims. As long as Muslims will continue this dogmatism, no amount of explanation can change a Hindu mind.
The moment Muslims give up their dogmatism and start respecting the faith of Hindus, Hindus will be more than happy to give Mohammad the same status as they give to Rama or Krishna.
